Red hot science fiction author Wesley Chu has a new novel in the works, the rights to which are starting to heat up the market. THE RECOVERED, which is being described in the vein of Minority Report, does not have an official release date, yet it’s already creating plenty of buzz around town.
The Recovered is a near-future mainstream thriller with science fiction overtones. In this depiction of the future, medical science has advanced to the point where somebody who has been, say, shot dead, can be brought back to life using ‘backup tape’–but what if something goes wrong with the ‘backup’? If you are your memories, but your memories are no longer up to date, who are you?
Like Chu’s previous work, this novel explores the idea of what it means to be human in an age of high technology, with a strong romantic storyline woven throughout. The story combines elements of a crime drama, an action thriller and a ‘cops vs. robbers’ narrative–though exactly who is the cop and who is robber is a central part of the mystery.
Chu is the award-winning author of The Lives of Tao and Time Salvager. Tao was previously in development with James Franco, while Salvager was recently sold to Paramount in a six-figure deal. Michael Bay is attached to adapt and direct, with Di Bonaventura Pictures set to produce. With the continued interest in thought-provoking science fiction, The Recovered is likely to be a hot property, and the rights are sure to go quickly.
