We now have our first spec sale of 2015. R-rated comedy spec SENIOR YEAR has sold to CBS Films for mid-six figures. The spec was hot ever since it went out earlier this week, landing in nearly a dozen major territories. We’ve confirmed that multiple offers were in last night and the deal with CBS was finalized this morning.
The spec was out from Jake Wagner at Benderspink and Greg Pedicin at Gersh, written by Andrew Knauer and Arthur Pielli (Ghost Team One). Senior Year centers on a cheerleader who, after falling from a pyramid and being knocked into a coma, wakes up 20 years later (present day) in the body of a 37 year old woman, but having only aged physically and knowing nothing else, she returns to claim her seat at the cool table and win the prom queen crown that eluded her.
Senior Year is only the third spec out thus far, proving that the wheels have been grinding slowly this January. The first month of the year is typically a slow month, what with Sundance and awards season in full swing, but this year, the spec market in particular has been off to a slow start. Senior Year was a hot spec out from the get-go and now with Sundance at a end, the sale should signal a momentum in the market.
