Mark your calendars for October 11, TV fans, because that’s when Fox’s sitcoms BROOKLYN NINE-NINE and NEW GIRL will collide. The network announced the two-part crossover today at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. It will start with B99 at 8 pm and immediately lead into New Girl a half hour later.
New Girl creator Liz Meriweather, who was at the panel, said: “New Girl andBrooklyn Nine-Nine will proudly and humbly go where few shows have gone since the 1990s. We know we have big shoes to fill, and we look forward to disappointing everyone.”
Television crossovers have made a bit of a comeback recently, specifically with The CW’s slate of shared-universe superhero shows (The Flash, Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl, which exists on another earth but that’s a technicality and it’s already crossed over with The Flash) and two other Fox shows, Bones and Sleepy Hollow. Whether or not these few attempts will cause more ripples of crossovers remains to be seen, but they’re definitely fun experiments.
There was no word about the plot of the crossover event, but with New Girl’s Winston (Lamorne Morris, the MVP of the series) being a cop, that could certainly come into play. Damon Wayans Jr., who previously appeared as a regular on New Girl as Coach, has also shown up on B99 as detective Stevie Schillens which could open the door for another connection between the two series.
New Girl Season 5 ended with Schmidt (Max Greenfield) and Cece (Hannah Simone) getting married, while Jess (Zooey Deschanel) and Sam (David Walton) break up and Jess realizes she still has feelings for Nick (Jake Johnson).
Meanwhile, B99 introduced a multi-episode arc in the latter half of Season 3, resulting in a sort of cliff-hanger finale, with Jake (Andy Samberg) and Captain Holt (Andre Braugher) having to go into witness protection.
