FRESH OFF THE BOAT Review: “WWJD: What Would Jessica Do?”

We’ve all seen the bumper sticker or phrase WWJD before. Many people ask themselves “What Would Jesus Do?” often, and in this week’s , Evan (Ian Chen) finds religion to Jessica’s (Constance Wu) great disdain. Meanwhile, Louis (Randall Park) must deal with his teeth being whitened to a great degree.

Costco is a great place. Buying in bulk is cheaper in the long run as you have more food for just about the same price as you’d spend at a grocery store anyways. Plus sometimes you can find great deals on other stuff as well. Watching Evan and Jessica bond over this as “Playaz Club” plays on was genius. But, as we discovered earlier by the WWJD bumper sticker Evan has a friend, Zack who goes to church on Sundays (and also has an uncontrollable bladders). Evan decides one Sunday morning to go to church as Zack has invited him. This was funny as religion has not been a real foundation in the Huang household. So Evan’s curiosity was hilarious. Jessica is left to go through Costco alone and finding it not the same without Evan by her side.

Louis offered Honey (Chelsey Crisp) and Marvin (Ray Wise) a free dinner and Marvin returns the favor by offering free teeth cleaning. But, Marvin (unwisely) whitens Louis’ teeth so brightly that everyone won’t stop making fun of Louis with his family claiming that he looks like a lighthouse. It’s obviously CG-ed but it was effective nonetheless. This leads to a falling out between Marvin and Louis. Marvin says he took Louis from a 7 to and 8 and a half. Ouch.

Eddie (Hudson Yang) and Emery (Forrest Wheeler) meanwhile eat all of the Frosted Flakes leaving them with the cereal they don’t like. Eddie and Emery decide to take the rest of the cereal to make it into a Rice Krispie type treat. That ultimately backfires as the two kids have trouble eating the hardened treat. So much so that Eddie cracks his tooth.

With Eddie’s cracked tooth in tow, Marvin and Louis patch things up and make up agreeing to pay full price for now on. Jessica uses the toy microphone to trick Evan that God is talking to him. Louis however exposes Jessica’s ruse. Evan disappointed walks away and Louis tells Jessica that she has a God complex. Realizing that church and Costco are almost the same thing (they both provide a sense of community, values and snacks) she finally confesses to Evan that she liked spending Sundays together with him. With that in mind Evan the following Sunday comes back to Costco with Jessica vowing to go to church the following Sunday (to which Jessica counters “We’ll see”).

This is was an average episode of Fresh Off the Boat, with Jessica learning yet another lesson. The highlights however were the digs at Louis and his teeth with Phil Donahue thrown in as well as a reference to the Muppet Mr. Teeth. I hope that we get more Marvin as it’s always great to see Ray Wise on this show. But man, I’m getting tired of Jessica being front and center with the lessons and understandings week after week.

Needle drops for this episode:

“Playaz Club” by Rappin’ 4-Tay
“Missing You” by Tina Turner
