From Marvel to Michael Jackson: “Thor: Ragnarok” Director Taika Waititi to Tackle “Bubbles”

Once he wraps Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok, director will segue to the stop-motion animated film Bubbles, ’s script about ’s famous pet chimpanzee that topped the 2015 Black List, was voted to the 2015 Hit List, and earned the writer a spot on the 2015 Young & Hungry List.

will co-direct the offbeat coming-of-age story alongside Waititi. and of will produce with ’s Starburns Industries, while Adamson and his manager will serve as executive . will sell U.S. rights, and is handling foreign sales at EFM.

Waititi seems like a strong fit for the project, given the unique sense of humor he has showcased on HBO’s Flight of the Conchords and with his own features Hunt for the Wilderpeople, What We Do in the Shadows and Eagle vs. Shark.

Typically, Marvel don’t follow their blockbuster comic book movies with stop-motion animation, but that’s what makes Waititi so interesting — his versatility and unpredictability.

Gustafson is currently developing Pinocchio with Guillermo del Toro, and he has previously worked on Fantastic Mr. Fox and the animation in A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas.

Waititi has owned up to being a huge fan, and wants to be very respectful of the artist and his legacy. He’s less interested in making a traditional biopic than in following Bubbles’ journey through the jungle of human life as he tries to make sense of the world.

Waititi said animation that blends facts with fantasy was the only way to approach such an original story, and pointed to Anomalisa as an example of a stop-motion film that did the medium proud.
