In a competitive situation, FX has bought up CAPER, an hourlong dark comedy from Dutch Southern, Magnus Martens and Circle of Confusion. Britton Rizzio and Greg Shephard will produce for Writ Large, while Brad Mendelsohn will oversee for Confusion.
The series is described as a Southern Gothic Texas Noir, done the Scandinavian way, as it follows the interconnected lives of three sets of criminals. Southern will pen the pilot, with Martens attached to direct. Dexter’s Tim Schlattman will serve as showrunner.
Southern is the screenwriter of Bad Turn Worse, a 2013 crime thriller, and the upcoming Hoof Harrington’s Greatest Hits. Martens is a director for the Cinemax series Banshee.
The tone of the series, which blends dark comedy with crime noir, suits the network’s brand, as it’s similar to another successful FX series Fargo, which saw its first season win the Emmy for Outstanding Miniseries, while its second season is garnering rave critical reviews. Similarly, American Horror Story blends elements of horror and dark humor, while another Southern-set crime drama Justified ended its run earlier this year.
