Gael Garcia Bernal is set to don the black mask as Zorro in Z Jonas Cuaron’s reboot of the classic franchise.
Cuaron will write and direct the 20th Century Fox movie which is expected to be a futuristic interpretation of the pulp hero. Garcia Bernal and Cuaron previously worked together on the thriller Desierto.
The film will be produced by Albert Martinez Martin of Lantica Media and Mark Amin of Sobini Films. Cami Winikoff, David W. Higgins and Antonio Gennari will serve as executive producers. It will be presented to buyers at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
The character of Zorro was created by Johnston McCulley in 1919 and has always been portrayed as valiant, yet cheeky black-masked bandit who protected villagers from threatening villains. Plenty of films and televisions shows have been made about the character. The hero was depicted in the 1998 movie The Mask of Zorro and in the 2005 follow-up The Legend of Zorro which both starred Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Garcia Bernal recently earned a Golden Globe for his role on Amazon’s Mozart in the Jungle. His also appeared in Werner Herzog’s Salt and Fire with Michael Shannon.
He is repped by WME.
