Game of Thrones alum Aidan Gillen, who has played Lord Petyr Baelish aka “Littlefinger” for the past seven seasons of the Emmy-winning show, has booked his next feature role. He’ll be playing Irish novelist and poet James Joyce in a new indie film from British filmmaker Robert Mullan (Mad to Be Normal) called JAMES AND LUCIA, the Tracking Board confirms.
Written and directed by Mullan, it centers on the near-blind Joyce as he’s writing Finnegans Wake while also dealing with the debilitating mental health issues that have struck his daughter Lucia, a dancer who was diagnosed as schizophrenic in the mid-thirties. She also had a failed romance with playwright Samuel Beckett and was treated by Carl Jung. The role of Lucia hasn’t been cast.
The film will be produced by Morris Ruskin from Shoreline Entertainment, Jesus Gonzalez of Calach Films and Mullan’s own Sisyphus Films with plans to begin filming in early 2018 in Dublin and Luxembourg.
Outside of his Game of Thrones duties, Gillen appeared in Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur: Legends of the Sword earlier this year, had a key role in John Carney’s Sing Street and starred in Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials in 2015.
Joyce has previously been played by Ewan McGregor in the 2000 film Nora and Robert Gill in Martin Scorsese’s 2011 film Hugo.
Gillen’s attachment to the project was first reported by Deadline.
