Having wrapped Star Wars: The Last Jedi and the upcoming season of Game of Thrones, Gwendoline Christie has signed on for a key role in Universal’s UNTITLED ROBERT ZEMECKIS PROJECT starring Steve Carell, the Tracking Board has learned.
Based on the acclaimed 2010 documentary Marwencol, the film tells the moving true story of how one broken man used his artistic imagination to restore his human spirit.
Insiders tell the Tracking Board that Christie will play a Russian princess/warrior who serves as Carell’s love interest within the world of Marwencol.
In addition to Christie, the film’s female-driven ensemble includes Leslie Mann, Janelle Monae, Diane Kruger and Baby Driver star Eiza Gonzalez.
Zemeckis is directing from a script he co-wrote with Caroline Thompson. He’s also producing with Steve Starkey and Jack Rapke under their ImageMovers banner, along with Cherylanne Martin.
Marwencol director Jeff Malmberg will serve as executive producer along with Jackie Levine, while Universal executives Maradith Frenkel and Chloe Yellin will oversee the project on behalf of the studio.
Best for her role as Brienne of Tarth on HBO’s Game of Thrones, Christie also played Captain Phasma in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and she’ll reprise her role in Star Wars: The Last Jedi this Christmas. The English actress, who also stars opposite Nicole Kidman and Elizabeth Moss in Top of the Lake, is represented by WME, Independent Talent Group and Jackoway Tyerman.
