German director Uli Edel, best known for films like Last Exit to Brooklyn and Body of Evidence, has tapped his next project as THE CIVILIAN, based on a spec script by Brian Pittman and Rachel Long. The project is being developed by Millennium Films.
The film is an action-thriller which could join the great spy films of the past several decades. It follows an American doctor whose identity is stolen by a covert operative. In order to clear his name, he must assume the dangerous mission of the spy who stole it. Sources say the studio is looking at actors like Ralph Fiennes for a lead role.
Mark Gill is producing for Millennium, while Avi Lerner, Trevor Short, Boaz Davidson, John Thompson, Christine Crow are all executive producing for the studio.
Edel’s last film was 2015’s supernatural thriller Pay the Ghost starring Nicolas Cage. He has an extensive background in both film and television, directing and co-writing the film The Baader Meinhof Complex (which was nominated for an Academy Award) and various television projects like Houdini (for which he was nominated for an Emmy) and The Mists of Avalon miniseries. He also has four other films currently in development, including Face Value starring Rachel Weisz.
Edel is repped by Gersh.
