Catherine Hardwicke is in talks to direct a remake of the 2011 Mexican thriller MISS BALA for Columbia Pictures, which has Gina Rodriguez on its shortlist of potential stars, sources tell the Tracking Board.
Miss Bala follows a beauty pageant contestant who witnesses a gang shooting and is subsequently kidnapped and forced to work for the gang in the drug trade. Gerardo Naranjo directed the original film, which received a foreign language Oscar nomination.
Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer is adapting the script for producers Kevin Misher of Misher Films and Pablo Cruz of Canana Films, the latter of whom produced the original movie. Andy Berman will serve as executive producer.
While Rodriguez doesn’t have an offer yet since Hardwicke just boarded the project, there’s no doubt she would absolutely crush this role, as the rising star of Jane the Virgin is a strong match for the material. The Golden Globe winner is coming off Peter Berg’s Deepwater Horizon and next stars in Alex Garland’s sci-fi movie Annihilation, which stole the show at CinemaCon last week. She’s repped by APA and Primary Wave Entertainment.
