Actor Gina Rodriguez established herself as the star of the CW show Jane the Virgin, although this past weekend, she could be seen in a very different role in Alex Garland’s sci-fi thriller Annihilation opposite Natalie Portman.
Rodriguez has been flexing her muscles as a producer recently, and she has just signed on to produce and star in Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s directorial debut SOMEONE GREAT for Netflix.
Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is the creator of MTV’s Sweet/Vicious, and she wrote the script for the romantic comedy about a woman who travels to New York City with her two best friends to have fun adventures after a terrible break-up. Someone Great is about “loss, growing up and above all, the everlasting bond of female friendships.”
The film is being produced by Bridesmaids director Paul Feig and Jessie Henderson of Feigco, along with Likely Story’s Anthony Bregman and Peter Cron and Rodriguez producing through her I Can and I Will Productions. Exec. producers are Dan Magnante from Feigco, Stefanie Azpiaza from Likely Story, Robinson and Emily Gipson from Rodriguez’s company.
Plans are to start production on the film in April.
Rodriguez is represented by CAA and Jackoway Tyerman, and she’s now on her fourth season of Jane the Virgin, for which she won a Golden Globe. She’s providing her voice for the Warner Bros. animated film Smallfoot, which will be released on Sept. 28, and she’s rumored to star in Catherine Hardwicke’s English language remake of Miss Bala.
The Hollywood Reporter first broke this news about Rodriguez’s involvement with the project.
