Warner Bros. and Legendary have announced the start of production on Michael Dougherty’s Godzilla sequel, which is currently untitled despite past references to , a moniker that remains unofficial.

The film stars Oscar nominees Vera Farmiga, Ken Watanabe and Sally Hawkins as well as Kyle Chandler, Bradley Whitford, Thomas Middleditch, Charles Dance, Aisha Hinds, rising young actor O’Shea Jackson Jr., Chinese superstar Zhang Ziyi and Stranger Things sensation Millie Bobby Brown in her feature film debut.

The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species — once thought to be mere myths — rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.

Dougherty directs from a script he wrote with Zach Shields. The Godzilla sequel is being produced by Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Brian Rogers and Thomas Tull, with Barry H. Waldman, Zach Shields, Yoshimitsu Banno and Kenji Okuhira serving as executive producers, and Alexandra Mendes co-producing for Legendary.

Filming is taking place mainly in Atlanta, Georgia, and the film is currently slated for release in March 2019. Dougherty is an intriguing choice for the Godzilla sequel and the cast he has assembled is impressive. Let’s hope the story is worth their efforts.
