Benicio Del Toro is racking up the villainous roles this year. He’s receiving rave reviews for his portrayal of a Mexican assassin in Sicario, he just recently signed on to play an as-of-yet unnamed villain in Star Wars: Episode VIII, and now he will join Peter Quill and the gang as the mysterious Collector in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2.
The news was revealed by Zoe Saldana on her husband’s Facebook page that she will see him in Guardians after praising his work in Sicario. Other confirmed returning supporting characters are Michael Rooker’s Yondu and Karen Gillan’s Nebula. What little other news has leaked on this film has set up this sequel to introduce Peter Quill’s father, who was mentioned by both Yondu and Glenn Close’s Nova Prime, who in the comics is known as J’son, the rightful emperor of the Spartoi Empire. His involvement means exciting news for Marvel’s TV property, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. because he can be the link that the Cinematic Universe needs to bring the Inhumans to the forefront.
The Collector, Taneleer Tivan, was originally a small part that served more as a plot device and a bonus for Marvel’s notorious post-credits scenes. However, Del Toro’s performance brought new life to the character as he vacillated from helpful middleman to psychotic enslaver. Tivan has been on a compulsive quest to gather the Infinity Gems after receiving the Aether (which will be revealed to be the Reality Stone) from Asgard during the post-credits scene at the end of Thor: The Dark World; then he continued with his deal to buy the purple Power Stone from Guardians, which literally blew up in his face. A truly chaotic character, Del Toro is sure to add a bit more excitement to the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel.
