Director Ava DuVernay’s adaptation of A WRINKLE IN TIME has been no stranger to landing big and talented names since the film’s casting got underway. The latest addition is Gugu Mbatha-Raw, known for her roles in films such as Belle and Concussion.
She’ll be joining the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, and Storm Reid in the lead role of Meg Murry. For her part, Mbatha-Raw will be playing Meg’s mother, Mrs. Murry who in DuVernay’s words, is a “brilliant scientist.”
Frozen’s Jennifer Lee is penning the adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s novel, which follows Meg, her little brother, and a classmate as they travel through time and space thanks to the powers of Mrs. Which (Winfrey), Mrs. Whatsit (Witherspoon), and Mrs. Who (Kaling), to find Meg’s missing scientist father.
Adam Borba and Jim Whitaker of Whitaker Entertainment are producing alongside Catherine Hand. Charlotte Voilkis will serve as executive producer and Sean Bailey, Tendo Nagenda, and Jessica Virtue are overseeing for Disney.
Mbatha-Raw first gained critical acclaim for her lead role in the period drama Belle. She then went on to appear in films such as Beyond the Lights, Concussion, and Free State of Jones. It’s her upcoming projects that have a lot of buzz around them, though. Over the next year, she can be seen in Miss Sloane with Jessica Chastain, The Whole Truth with Keanu Reeves and Renée Zellwegger, Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast, God Particle, and Star Wars: Episode VIII.
