Gugu Mbatha-Raw has signed on to star in director Gina Prince-Bythewood’s adaptation of Roxane Gay’s debut novel, AN UNTAMED STATE. This will mark the second collaboration between the actress and the director since 2014’s Beyond The Lights.
An Untamed State tells the story of a privileged Haitian-American woman who is kidnapped for ransom in front of her family and forced to survive and reclaim her life.
Prince-Bythewood co-wrote the film with the author and will be released by Fox Searchlight. Michael De Luca will produce under Michael De Luca Productions alongside Prince-Bythewood. Mindy Schultheis and Michael Hanel have signed on to be executive producers.
Mbatha-Raw recently starred in Concussion and can be seen in the forthcoming civl war drama Free State of Jones alongside Matthew McConaughey. Next year, she will star with Jessica Chastain in Miss Sloane as well as the live-action adaptation of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. She is repped by CAA and Curtis Brown Group.
In addition to Beyond the Lights, Prince-Bythewood has directed The Secret Life of Bees and Love & Basketball. She also directed and produced the TV series, Shots Fired which can be seen later this year. She is repped by CAA.
