SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK
has received a jolt of energy in the form of . The director will develop and potentially helm the adaptation of the trilogy of short stories.

The books were published in 1984, written by Alvin Schwartz and illustrated by Stephen Gammell. It continually landed at the top of the American Library Association’s “Most Challenged” list after the series was considered to be too scary for children, but the ban merely fueled sales and created a cultural sensation.

The script was adapted by . , , and are producing after putting the project into in 2013. Del Toro will produce alongside the trio.

Del Toro most recently directed the gothic-horror Crimson Peak starring Tom Hiddleston and Jessica Chastain, and is currently at work on a sequel to the hit actioner Pacific Rim.

    I’m sure this is an innocent mistake and something just got garbled from draft to draft in the reporting, but please think about this statement. The ALA works very hard to promote intellectual freedom, and brings attention to books that HAVE been banned, or “challenged”: http://www.ala.org/bbooks/frequentlychallengedbooks

    The work against the idea of banning books. Let’s give them credit for the work they do!
