“Hacksaw Ridge” Scribe Robert Schenkkan To Write KKK Drama for Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Amazon Studios

Pulitzer-prize winning writer has been brought on to write the drama for Amazon Studios. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is attached to star in and produce the film through his hitRECord Films. Schenkkan is adapting the Slate article by Matthew Pearl, first published in March of 2016.

The story chronicles the rise of the KKK in the American South in 1865 and the work of Major Lewis Merrill (Levitt), the man who led the U.S. Army’s elite K Troop that exterminated the group in 1871.

Schenkkan is a veteran writer for both television and film, with credits that include HBO’s The Pacific, the Lyndon Johnson biopic All the Way (based on his play), the Oscar-nominated drama The Quiet American, and Mel Gibson’s upcoming war drama Hacksaw Ridge.
