Bumblebee has appeared in all of Michael Bay’s Transformers films, though his solo movie will be the first live-action film directed by Laika CEO Travis Knight, who recently made his directorial debut with the animated film Kubo and the Two Strings.
Plot details regarding the Bumblebee movie remain a secret, though Steinfeld is expected to play a tomboy who works as a mechanic after school and inevitably crosses paths with the yellow-and-black Autobot.
Bay is producing Bumblebee with Steven Spielberg, Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Hasbro’s Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis. The script will be credited to Christina Hodson, who was part of a writers room that was created to come up with fresh stories for the Transformers universe.
Paramount will release Transformers: The Last Knight on June 23, while Bumblebee is slated to spread its wings into theaters on June 8, 2018.
Steinfeld earned an Oscar nomination for True Grit and is coming off strong reviews for her Golden Globe-nominated turn in The Edge of Seventeen. Several studios have been chasing Steinfeld since she joined the Pitch Perfect franchise, and Warner Bros. had been courting her to star in The Selection, though Steinfeld appears to have selected Bumblebee for the time being.
