As the war for the iron throne is entering the final act, and final seasons, HBO is not ready to say goodbye to GAME OF THRONES and has put four different series in development based on the Westeros universe. Current showrunners Dan Weiss and David Benioff are not currently attached to pen any of the potential series but will executive produce.
Details on the various series are being kept under wraps, so they could be direct spinoffs, sequels, prequels, or simply another story taking place in Westeros. Scribes Max Borenstein, Jane Goldman, Brian Helgeland, and Carly Wray have been tapped to each pen one of the series. Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin will be writing the projects with Goldman and Wray. There is no timetable for when any of these series would air, with HBO deciding to make their choice on which series are moving forward after the scripts are in.
Game of Thrones‘ season seven will debut in July, and Benioff and Weiss are at work on the eighth and final season which will air in 2018. Both seasons have received a shorter episode order than previous years, which each had ten episodes.
Borenstein previously penned Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla. He is currently working on Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong. He is repped by UTA.
Goldman isn’t new to fantasy, having previously adapted Neil Gaiman’s Stardust. She has also written the comic book actioners Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Kingsman: The Secret Service, and Kingsman: The Golden Circle. She is repped by WME.
This will be a return to the medieval world for Helgeland, having written and directed A Knight’s Tale starring Heath Ledger and Paul Bettany. More recently he wrote and directed the Jackie Robinson biopic 42, and the Tom Hardy-starrer Legend. He is best known for writing L.A. Confidential, which netted him an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay, and Mystic River, for which he was nominated for an Oscar. He is repped by CAA.
Wray’s background is in television, giving her the longest resume on the list with credits on Mad Men, The Bastard Executioner, and The Leftovers among others. She is repped by WME.
