While names like Javier Bardem and Viggo Mortensen have been thrown around for Roland the Gunslinger, no actor has made a firm commitment. The seven-novel series takes place in an apocalyptic reality, where a lone gunslinger traverses a dangerous desert to find the mysterious Man in Black.
Ron Howard and Brian Grazer have been behind the project for a while, hiring Akiva Goldsman to adapt, possibly creating a three-film series and, at one time, a TV companion. While the film has been in development for a very long time, more interest could be generated with a superstar addition in Crowe.
Having said that, in this writer’s opinion, Mortensen IS Roland.
Crowe won an Oscar for his performance in Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator” and will next be seen playing the villainous Javert in Tom Hooper’s musical adaptation of “Les Miserables.” He will also appear, next summer, in Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel” starring Henry Cavill. The Aussie thesp will play Superman’s biological father, Jor-El, and is currently filming “Noah” with Darren Aronofsky.
He is repped by WME.
