Max Landis’s spec DEEPER is gaining traction as the script was circulated this week and has attached Oscar-nominated actor Bradley Cooper and White God director Kornel Mundruczo. We’re hearing that a big bidding war is brewing over the project, with multiple offers already in.
The spec follows a disgraced astronaut who enlists on a mission to reach the bottom of a recently discovered oceanic trench. He becomes subject to an increasing amount of danger and is reluctantly pulled into a psychological and physical battle with unexpected forces.
The project was set up at XYZ just last year, but is now out to buyers follow the massive success of Landis’s other spec Bright. Bright was recently packaged with Will Smith and Joel Edgerton to star and David Ayer directing. It sold to Netflix after a fierce bidding war, with the streaming giant offering a $90 million production commitment. Landis also has a TV series, Dirk Gently, in the works at BBC America. The series is set to star Samuel Barnett and Elijah Wood. His action-comedy feature, Mr. Right, will bow in the U.S. on April 8.
The young writer has had enormous success since he burst on the scene with his script Chronicle, which was featured on the 2010 Hit List. Landis is currently in development on the period drama Houdini, based on the legendary magician. He is repped by WME and Writ Large.
Cooper, meanwhile, recently nabbed $8.9 million for the WB remake of A Star Is Born. Cooper will star and make his directorial debut on the feature. He will next be seen opposite Jonah Hill and Miles Teller in War Dogs. Cooper is repped by CAA.
Conversations over the project are just beginning, so we’ll keep you updated as the bids roll in…
