Academy Award-winning actor Helen Mirren is in talks to join Disney’s THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS as a character named Mother Ginger. The live-action adaptation also stars Mackenzie Foy, Morgan Freeman, Keira Knightley, and ballerina Misty Copeland.
Lasse Hallstrom is set to direct the movie from Ashleigh Powell’s script which is based on E.T.A. Hoffman’s The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. The story follows on a young girl named Clara (Foy) who receives a nutcracker doll from her godfather on Christmas Eve. When the clock strikes midnight, she finds herself thrust into a fantastical world where she is in the middle of a war between gingerbread soldiers and an army of mice.
Sam Dickerman and Allison Erlikhman are overseeing for Disney, alongside executive producer Lindy Goldstein and producer Mark Gordon. Sara Smith is overseeing the production for The Mark Gordon Company.
Mirren can be seen next in the blockbuster Fast 8 as well as the drama Collateral Beauty alongside Will Smith, Edward Norton, Kate Winslet, and fellow Nutcracker star Knightley.
