Helena Bonham Carter has joined the cast of (the Action-Barbie re-imagining of) CINDERELLA, opposite Cate Blanchett, Lily James, Richard Madden, Holliday Grainger and maybe Sophie McShera. Story follows Cinderella (James) who must fight her way out of the enchanted forest in order to prevent the prince (Madden) from entering a marriage that will destroy the kingdom.
Carter will play the fairy godmother who will be disguised as an old beggar who watches over Cinderella before revealing herself as the magical being she truly is. If you’ve seen any role she’s been in the last 10 years you’ll know she’s no stranger to goofy character in makeup. She’s kinda of the female Johnny Depp in that regard.
Chris Weitz rewrote a draft/pitch from Aline Brosh McKenna. Kenneth Branagh will direct, no doubt adding that Shakespearian pizazz that’s been sorely lacking in all the other Cinderella movies. Producing will be Simon Kinberg, Allison Shearmur and David Barron.
Carter was last in Tom Hooper’s “Les Misérables” *shudder* and will next appear in “The Lone Ranger.”
She is repped by WME.
