“Homeland” Actor Rupert Friend to Write and Direct Biopic “Cornerman” with GK Films (EXCLUSIVE)

Hitman: Agent 47 star is set to try his hand at directing and writing for a second time with the biopic about boxing trainer Cus D’Amato. The project is currently in pre-production with and .

D’Amato was an Italian-American legendary trainer in the world of boxing for several decades during the mid-twentieth century. He trained the likes of Mike Tyson, Floyd Patterson, and José Torres, all of whom went on to join the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Cornerman will focus on D’Amato’s relationship and journey training Tyson in an effort to cement his legacy.

Casting is underway for the film, which is being produced by Graham King and Denis O’Sullivan of GK, Gastón Pavlovich of Fabrica, as well as Aimee Mullins and Lawrence Inglee.

Friend is no stranger to films about real people. He co-starred in The Young Victoria opposite Emily Blunt in the lead role as Prince Albert and recently wrapped production on The Death of Stalin, in which he plays Vasily Stalin, the son of Joseph Stalin. Most recently, he’s had a recurring role on the last several seasons of Homeland.

While this will be his second feature as director and writer, he previously wrote and directed the short “Steve” in 2012’s Stars in Shorts anthology. His first feature, Barton & Charlie, is currently in development and he will star in, produce, write, and direct the film, which reteams him with Blunt.
