John Malkovich

is not known for his television work, but people might start re-thinking that with his next project. From Sony TV and Anonymous Content, Malkovich has signed on to star in , an upcoming series based on Emily Brady’s nonfiction book Humboldt: Life on America’s Marijuana Frontier. The series, which comes from a spec by Michael A. Lerner, is intended for cable and streaming networks.

The book was inspired and written from Brady’s personal accounts of living in a Northern California town that relied on the growth and sales of marijuana for one year. She got to know the private residents, and explore how the increasing legality of the plant is changing things for them.

Malkovich is set to star as the quirky patriarch of a crime family based in Northern California.

Lerner and Malkovich are set to executive produce, alongside Elliot Webb, Alissa Philips, Alex Goldstone, Adam Shulman of Anonymous Content. Jennifer Rawlings of Omni Artists Ltd. will produce and Carl Franklin of House of Cards is set to direct.
