Frozen star Idina Menzel is about to feel the wind beneath her wings in the upcoming remake of the 1988 drama, BEACHES. Lifetime has greenlit a contemporary version of the Garry Marshall-directed film for television and the Tony Award-winning actress is set to play CC, the role originated by Bette Midler.
Beaches centers on the lifelong friendship of two women, CC and Hillary (originally played by Barbara Hershey), who met on the Venice Boardwalk as little girls. Coming from two different worlds, they maintain their relationship for decades amidst life-changing highs and lows.
The remake will include new songs and will be directed by Allison Anders with a script by Bart Baker and Nikole Beckwith. Denise Di Novi and Alison Greenspan will serve as executive producers for A+E Studios. No word yet on who will fill Hershey’s role of Hillary, but the TV movie is set to start production on August 15 with its eyes set on a 2017 release date.
Menzel is no stranger to television, having appeared on multiple episodes of the Fox musical comedy Glee. Her film credits include Enchanted and Rent, which she originally starred in on Broadway.
