The premise of THE MOUNTAIN BETWEEN US may seem bland and unoriginal — survival stories tend to follow all the same tropes — but with two critically acclaimed actors leading the way, in this case, Idris Elba and Kate Winslet, there might be something more to this film. Whether or not this first trailer shows that is up for debate.
The trailer sets up the movie’s simple (well, seemingly simple, it is only a two-minute trailer after all) plot well: two people (Elba and Winslet) take a small private plane to get to where they need to be quickly — him for a surgery, her for her wedding. Unfortunately, as things go in survival movies, the plane crashes and the two passengers (and a dog, because there always has to be a dog, just as long as nothing happens to the dog) are the only survivors. Now, they must rely on each other if they want to make it out of this situation alive. It’s a good thing Elba’s a doctor.
See what I mean? Somewhat unoriginal. But Winslet is an Oscar-winner, Elba is a Golden Globe-winner, and they’ve had years to prove they’re compelling and commanding performers and that alone is enough to get me on board with this film.
The film is based on the novel of the same name by Charles Martin. Hany Abu-Assad is helming this adaptation based on a script by Chris Weitz and J. Mills Goodloe.
