“Insecure” Star Issa Rae Joins Bill Hader in “Empress of Serenity”

, the Golden Globe-nominated star of HBO’s Insecure, is set to join Bill Hader in Jesse Andrews’ , it was announced Wednesday by Good Universe and Mr. Mudd.

Hader will play Sheldon, a man whose elaborate plan to win back his ex-wife is upended when he’s guilted into a month long mega-cruise with his widowed father. Rae will co-star as Michelle, a reclusive kindred spirit in the cabin next door who becomes both the aid and the obstacle in Sheldon’s plan.

Andrews is the author and screenwriter of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, and he’ll be making his directorial debut from his own original screenplay.

After collaborating on The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Stephen Chbosky will produce alongside Mr. Mudd’s Lianne Halfon and Russell Smith. Nathan Kahane and Joe Drake of Good Universe will executive produce alongside Mr. Mudd’s John Malkovich.

Erin Westerman will oversee the project on behalf of Good Universe, whose Dan Freedman negotiated the deal on behalf of the film’s producers. Production is expected to start this August.

Not only will Empress of Serenity be Rae’s first major movie, but it pairs her with another piece of HBO talent, as Hader’s hitman series Barry is also set up at the cable network.

Rae created Insecure and proved she’s a creative force to be reckoned with, as it was one of last year’s best new shows. The charming multi-hyphenate first received mainstream attention with her award-winning web series The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl, and she also published a bestselling collection of essays under the same title. She’s represented by , and attorney John Meigs at Hansen, Jacobson.
