Marvel fans weren’t prepared for this.
Friday evening the official Marvel Studios Twitter account posted a three and a half minute video — of the first look at AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR. Opening with a teaser of the Infinity Stones, which have been in play in the universe for several movies now, things get really exciting when the text, “January 23, 2017 / Day One,” appears and fans are greeted with the sight of one of the numerous sets for the film (set against a green screen, of course)…
… And Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.), Spider-Man (Tom Holland), and Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) themselves. An official cast list hasn’t been released for the film, but I think we can safely say Spidey and the leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy (and the rest of his team) will be making appearances.
Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, in dramatic black & white, recounts the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), beginning with 2008’s surprise hit Iron Man, which allowed all of this to happen. He also explains that everything in the MCU has been building up to this moment — the fight for the Infinity Stones against Thanos (Josh Brolin), complete with some cool concept art of the Big Purple Guy.
Next in the black & white hot seat are directors Anthony and Joe Russo and writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, arguably the most important visionaries of the MCU. Their handling of the characters and materials have been exceptional since they first leapt onto the scene, the Russos with Captain America: The Winter Soldier and the pair of writers since The First Avenger, the former of which remains the best film of the entire franchise.
The duos explain the state of the universe at the time of Infinity War, with Tony Stark not speaking to Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) as an impending threat gets closer and closer to Earth.
The rest of the video is behind the scenes clips of the film and sequences from past films in the franchise. While it doesn’t give away much that fans didn’t already know, the video was still completely unexpected and is sure to get them talking.
