Academy Award-winning actor J.K. Simmons and Golden Globe winner Martin Sheen have been tapped for the animated adaptation of THE BOXCAR CHILDREN: SURPRISE ISLAND at Legacy Classics and Shout! Factory.
Simmons is set to voice the character of Dr. Moore while Sheen will play James Alden. The two actors join voice cast members Joey King, Carter Sand, Gil Birmingham, Griffin Gluck, Stephen Stanton, and Talitha Bateman.
Surprise Island is set to be the first of three new animated films from Shout! Factory and Legacy’s new roster of family movies. The first installment is slated to be released in the fall of 2017 which will coincide with the 75th anniversary of the best-selling book series by Gertrude Chandler Warner on which the films are based. The series follows Henry, Jessie, Violet and Benny, four orphaned siblings who take up residence in an abandoned boxcar after being afraid to live with the grandfather they’ve never met.
Dan Chuba and Mark Dippé are directing the film from a screenplay written by Chuba. The movie is being produced by Legacy Classics and co-produced by Shout! Factory, Albert Whitman & Company, and Blueberry Pictures.
Simmons can be seen next in the musical La La Land and stars in Morten Tyldum’s forthcoming Starz series Counterpart. Other films on his slate for the next year include the comedy Bastards and DC’s Justice League.
Sheen currently stars in the Netflix series Grace and Frankie and can be seen in Warren Beatty’s upcoming film Rules Don’t Apply.
Simmons is repped by Gersh and Paradigm.
Sheen is repped by ICM Partners and Special Artists Agency.
