Get ready for lots of Avatar, because we are going to be getting a lot of it. Director James Cameron announced today at Cinemacon during the 20th Century Fox presentation that in addition to Avatar 2, he will be releasing three more sequels through 2023.
The first sequel to the 2009 original is slated to be released during Christmas in 2018. This will be followed by Avatar 3 in 2020, Avatar 4 in 2022, and Avatar 5 in 2023. That is a whole lot of blue.
Cameron that he wanted to expand the series and has been working with the top screenwriters and designers in the world to create an entire cinematic universe. “We’ve decided to embark on a truly massive cinematic process,” he said during the CinemaCon presentation. “We’ve begun to bump up against the limitation of our art form. There’s just too much story.”
No word yet on the plot details or if Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana will reprise their roles, but each sequel is said to be a standalone movie that will be part of a bigger saga. In addition, the Oscar-winning director unveiled a new logo for the Avatar-verse which can be seen below.
