Netflix
Netflix already released a film from Suicide Squad director David Ayer with that film’s star Will Smith, but the streaming network is also releasing THE OUTSIDER, a crime-thriller starring Jared Leto aka Suicide Squad‘s Joker, on March 9, and you can eye the new trailer and poster below.
Directed by Dutch director Martin Zandvliet (Oscar nominee Land of Mine), The Outsider is produced by Ken Kao, Art Linson and John Linson. Co-starring with Leto is Tadanobu Asano, Kippei Shiina, Shioli Kutsuna, Emile Hirsch, Raymond Nicholson, Rory Cochrane, Nao Omori and Min Tanaka.
In the film, Leto plays “an American soldier imprisoned in post-war Japan who enters the dark world of the yakuza, adopting their way of life in repayment for his freedom.”
The Outsider continues Netflix’s ongoing strategy to release a brand-new movie every single week, which is more than any other studio currently releasing films theatrically. Even so, streaming a Japan-set movie with an Oscar-winning name star like Leto is likely to get more attention on Netflix than it would if it was given a limited theatrical release, so clearly, Netflix’s plan seems to be working.
