Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson will star opposite Adam Sandler in his latest Netflix feature, SANDY WEXLER. Sandler is writing the script with Dan Bulla and Paul Sado, while The Do-Over helmer Steven Brill is set to direct.
Sandler will star as the titular Wexler, a talent manager working in Los Angeles in the 1990s, diligently representing a group of eccentric clients on the fringes of show business. His single-minded devotion is put to the test when he falls in love with his newest client, Courtney Clarke (Hudson), a tremendously talented singer who he discovers at an amusement park. Over the course of a decade, the two of them play out a star-crossed love story.
Sandler will produce through his Happy Madison shingle with Allen Covert. Barry Bernardi and Ted Sarandos are executive producing.
In 2014, Sandler signed a four movie deal with Netflix. The first two films, The Ridiculous Six and The Do-Over, were released in 2015 and early 2016, respectively. The deal was one of the first of its kind for Netflix – and according to CEO Sarandos, it is paying off thus far: Upon the launch of The Ridiculous Six, Sarandos declared that the Western spoof was the most-watched movie on the streaming service in the first thirty days of release, and was the number one streamed movie in multiple foreign territories. Despite being panned by critics, Netflix’s internal numbers prove the broad appeal and continuing star power of Sandler and his brand.
Hudson, who won an Academy Award for her performance in Dream Girls, recently appeared in Spike Lee’s Chi-raq. She has also been cast as Motormouth Maybelle in NBC’s upcoming Hairspray Live!
She is repped by CAA and Azoff MSG Entertainment.
