Sashay away, So You Think You Can Dance, because there’s about to be a new dancing competition show on the air.
NBC has greenlit the new series, titled WORLD OF DANCE, with ten episodes. Triple-threat Jennifer Lopez is teaming with the network and global media company World of Dance to bring the series to life. She will executive produce, but it is unknown if she will appear on-screen at all.
The show will divide competitors into three groups — under 16, over 16, and teams — and feature solo acts dancing against duos and crews for the grand prize of one million dollars. Dancers will be chosen from events around the country, as well as online submissions. This sets the show apart enough from SYTYCD, which focuses on the Top 20 dancers after several rounds of nation-wide auditions and features a grand prize of typically $250,000 and the title “America’s Favorite Dancer.” Napoleon and Tabitha D’umo, best known as Nappytabs, choreographers from SYTYCD, will also appear on World of Dance.
In discussing her involvement with the show, Lopez made the following statement: “This will be a fierce talent-heavy dance competition that embraces the raw emotion and excitement that dance represents. I am excited to work with World of Dance, an organization that has had an immeasurable impact on the dance community, to give all dancers an enormous platform where their dreams can be realized.”
She made the announcement of the show in the following video:
