Joaquin Phoenix is eyeing a role in the dark comedy western THE SISTERS BROTHERS starring John C. Reilly. The indie is based on the book by Patrick DeWitt and marks the English-language feature film debut of French director Jacques Audiard.
The movie follows two hired guns who journey from Oregon City to San Francisco to murder a prospector, but find that their intended target may have a better offer for them. This would be a follow-up film to Audiard’s Dheepan which won the Palme d’Or at last year’s Cannes Film Festival. Reilly is also set to produce with Michael De Luca.
Phoenix was last seen in Woody Allen’s Irrational Man opposite Emma Stone. He also received critical acclaim for his role in Spike Jonze’s Her and starred in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice. He is currently circling the role of Jesus Christ in Garth Davis’s upcoming Mary Magdalene opposite Rooney Mara.
He is repped by WME.
