Francis Lawrence’s upcoming spy thriller RED SPARROW is looking to add Joel Edgerton to the cast. The Midnight Special actor would star opposite Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence in the adaptation of the novel by Jason Matthews.
The Tracking Board broke the story of Lawrence’s involvement with the 20th Century Fox film nearly a year ago. The project would be a reunion for her and the Hunger Games helmer. Before Francis Lawrence agreed to sit in the director’s chair, the project made its rounds around Hollywood with a revolving door of directors showing interest including David Fincher and Darren Aronofsky. At one point, Rooney Mara was previously announced to be in talks for the lead role of Russian Spy Dominika Egorova, but the role eventually went to Lawrence.
The story centers on a Russian spy and a CIA agent assigned to compromise the other, but they soon find themselves in a charged duel of wills, skills, and forbidden romance.
Justin Haythe wrote the current draft of the script originally penned by Eric Warren. Chernin Entertainment is set to produce alongside Steve Zaillian with Garrett Basch serving as executive producer.
In addition to the critically acclaimed Midnight Special Edgerton has been keeping busy with films behind and in front of the camera including The Gift, Black Mass, and Jane Got a Gun. He can be seen next in the buzzworthy Awards season pic Loving opposite Ruth Negga.
