Academy Award-winning singer/songwriter John Legend is set to appear on the second season of UNDERGROUND on WGN America. Legend, who also serves as executive producer of the show, will play iconic abolitionist Frederick Douglass.
Douglass is one of many real-life historical figures that have been featured in Underground. Aisha Hinds is set for a recurring role as Harriet Tubman while Chris Chalk will play African American abolitionist William Still. Sadie Stratton will also appear on the show as notorious slave trader Patty Cannon.
Underground was created by Misha Green and Joe Pokaski. The upcoming 10-episode season follows an unremitting struggle for freedom within a divided America on the brink of civil war, each side vying to enact their own justice. The ensemble cast includes Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Aldis Hodge, Christopher Meloni, Jessica de Gouw and others.
Legend is a multi-platinum Grammy Award-winning musician who is becoming more and more involved with film and television. He won the Academy Award with Common for Best Original Song for Ava DuVernay’s Selma and serves as executive producer for the recent Obama-centric Southside with You. He can be seen next in the buzzworthy movie musical La La Land, which he also executive produced.
He is repped by WME.
