Keanu Reeves will keep the headshots coming in JOHN WICK: CHAPTER THREE, which will be released on May 17, 2019, it was announced Thursday by Lionsgate.
That means the John Wick franchise is graduating to summer movie season, where there will be a bit more competition than the last sequel had in February, when it opened to $30 million.
Right now, John Wick: Chapter Three doesn’t have any competition on that date, though it will still have to contend with the third frame of Marvel’s untitled Avengers movie, plus the releases of Disney’s Aladdin and WB’s Minecraft the following weekend.
Still, John Wick skews quite a bit older than those family-films given its hard-R rating, so don’t expect those blockbuster titles to have much impact on what could be Keanu’s last go-round as the deadly assassin.
Plot details of Chapter Three remain under wraps, but really, does this movie even need a plot? I’m pretty sure the studio knows that we just want to see John Wick kill a bunch of people in cool, creative ways. Personally, I just hope they employ a similar soundtrack as Chapter Two.
Speaking of which, Derek Kolstad is back to write the third film, which is expected to be directed by Chad Stahelski. Of course, a lot can change over the next two years, so if Stahelski is lured away by an even bigger action movie, I’d like to see either Gareth Evans (The Raid), Ilya Naishuller (Hardcore) or even Jeong Byeong-Gil (The Villainess) take the reins of this franchise.
