Actor Johnny Depp has played a pirate, a Mad Hatter, a demon barber, and now he’ll play a wizard — or at least someone in J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world. The prolific star has landed a role in FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM PART TWO, which is being directed by frequent Harry Potter helmer David Yates with a script from Rowling.
It is not yet known who (or what) Depp will play, but the exclusive Deadline report indicates there might be a small glimpse of him in the first installment, which premieres on November 18.
The upcoming first film takes place in 1920s New York City and follows magizoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) as several magical creatures are let loose on the city, in the midst of rising tensions between the wizarding community and no-majs (or whatever the plural is) aka the American version of muggles. Recently, the new franchise was upped from a trilogy to a five-film series, promising bigger stories that will likely see the introduction of several new characters.
The sequel is expected to start shooting early next year.
Most recently, Depp reprised his role as the Mad Hatter in Alice Through the Looking Glass. His upcoming roles consist of the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean film, Dead Men Tell No Tales, where he’ll return as Captain Jack Sparrow; London Fields with Billy Bob Thornton; and the sequel Gnomeo & Juliet: Sherlock Gnomes as the voice of the titular Sherlock Gnomes. He was also recently cast in Kenneth Branagh’s adaptation of Murder on the Orient Express.
He’s repped by CAA.
