Johnny Depp has found his next eccentric character, as the star has joined SHERLOCK GNOMES with the intent to voice the titular detective. The film serves as a sequel to the 2011 hit Gnomeo and Juliet, which starred James McAvoy and Emily Blunt. Blunt and McAvoy will reprise their respective roles as Elton John’s Rocket Pictures returns to produce.
The film begins when a string of garden gnome disappearances rock London, spurring Gnomeo and Juliet to enlist the services of legendary detective Sherlock Gnomes to crack the case. Kung Fu Panda helmer John Stevenson directs from a script by Ben Zazove. Paramount Animation and MGM will release.
Depp is no stranger to animation, having previously voiced the titular character in Rango and a lead in Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride. Depp will next reprise his role as the Mad Hatter in Disney’s Alice Through the Looking Glass (See the trailer here) and will once again return for the next Pirates of the Caribbean.
He’s repped by UTA.
