Josh Gad has just closed a deal to star as film critic and screenwriter Roger Ebert in STX’s upcoming film, RUSS & ROGER GO BEYOND. Will Ferrell is already attached to play Russ Meyer, the low budget filmmaker who moved from sexploitation movies to make 1970s Hollywood classic Beyond the Valley of the Dolls with Ebert. The film is directed by Michael Winterbottom, who did a polish on the original script by Chris Cluess.
The film follows Ebert and Meyer during the late 1960s, when Ebert was just starting as a film critic and Meyer was creating films like Faster Pussycat! Kill Kill! on shoestring budgets. Ebert wrote Meyer saying how much he admired his work just as 20th Century Fox signed a picture deal with him. The two decided to collaborate on a project for Fox, and ended up with the first X-rated movie to come from a studio. The film is a comedy built around the wild ride that the two had while getting around the MPAA, studio executives, and having wild parties while making their classic film.
Gad is probably best known for first portraying the lead in the hit Broadway musical, The Book of Mormon and for his comedic snowman Olaf in Disney’s Frozen. He also just finished the first season of The Comedians on FX with Billy Crystal. He is repped by WME and Brillstein Entertainment.
