An adaptation of Maria Semple’s New York Times Bestseller novel TODAY WILL BE DIFFERENT has landed at HBO with Julia Roberts attached to star and produce via her Red Om Films shingle. The limited series is in development with Annapurna Television, with Semple penning the script and executive producing.
The book tells the story of Eleanor Flood over the course of a single day when life suddenly happens — including buried secrets coming to light, of course — and how she navigates the fallout.
Megan Ellison and Sue Naegle of Annapurna will executive produce the project, as the company continues its relationship with Semple. They are also working on a feature film adaptation of her adaptation Where’d You Go Bernadette with Richard Linklater directing and Cate Blanchett starring.
This is also not Semple’s first experience with television, as she has previously worked on Arrested Development and Ellen. She’s repped by UTA.
Coming off a starring role in Jodie Foster’s Money Monster last year, this project returns Roberts to the small screen after her role in the 2014 HBO TV movie The Normal Heart. She will next be seen in Lionsgate’s Wonder alongside Jacob Tremblay and Owen Wilson. She’s repped by CAA.
