Julianna Margulies is returning to television and has been set to star in AMC’ new drama Dietland, Tracking Board has confirmed.
Based on Sarai Walker’s 2015 novel of the same name, Dietland is set against the backdrop of the beauty industry and is described as part-character drama and part-revenge fantasy, which will purport to explore society’s obsession with weight loss and beauty in a bold, original and funny way.
Joy Nash will play the lead role of Plum Kettle, who has been obese all her life and preparing for lap band surgery when her world is upturned by two rival feminist factions.
Margulies will play the role of Kitty, a wildly ambitious magazine editor whose world is thrown into chaos when a feminist terrorist organization starts targeting people in her orbit. Sucked into a terrifying news cycle, Kitty can no longer rely on her old-school media power and must instead play a whole new game of master manipulation where rules no longer apply.
“Juliana is diabolically talented and beautiful, which makes her perfect to play our Kitty. I am genuinely honored to have the opportunity to work with her. She’s a special human and a rare actor,” said Noxon in a statement. “I can’t wait to start and for the world to get a load of this show. I am also so grateful to AMC and Skydance for supporting us and trusting the ‘Dietland’ team with this provocative, wild story.”
Noxon is executive producer, writer and showrunner. Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Marcy Ross are executive producers, along with Maria Grasso of Tiny Pyro, Bonnie Curtis and Julie Lynn of Mockingbird Pictures and Jackie Hoyt.
The drama was developed under AMC’s “script-to-series” model, which opens writers’ rooms for potential series before they are officially given the greenlight.
Margulies recently wrapped up seven seasons of CBS’ The Good Wife and was a long-running star on NBC’s ER prior to that. She is represented by WME.
