“Jumanji” Gained Ground on “The Last Jedi” Leading up to New Year’s Day

It was mostly a happy New Year at the box office as a number of strong new movies gave some serious competition to the “sure-thing” sequels like Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Pitch Perfect 3, and the box office flourished with a boost from holiday business. Barring any surprises with actual numbers, the top six movies remained the same from last weekend.

Lucasfilms’ Star Wars: The Last Jedi might be the biggest story at the holiday box office only because it went into the holidays with a solid $220 million from its opening weekend and had already grossed $454 million before last Friday. It added another $52.7 million over the three-day holiday weekend and $67.2 million including New Year’s Day, which would bring its domestic total to $532 million.

That might be down almost 32% from The Last Jedi’s $99 million second weekend, but it also makes it the eighth highest grossing movie domestically, as it falls just short of surpassing last year’s Rogue One before making a play for the $534.8 million grossed by ’s The Dark Knight. (The Last Jedi should pass both those movies to become the sixth highest grossing movie sometime today.) The movie’s predecessor Star Wars: The Force Awakens grossed $686.4 million by New Year’s Day on its way to setting a new domestic record of $937 million.There’s a good chance Last Jedi will hit $600 million sometime in the next week, and we’ll have to see how it fares over January with many new releases.

Overseas, The Last Jedi matched its domestic take with another $68 million (over the three days)  in 54 markets, which make up 88% of the global box office, allowing the Rian Johnson-directed sequel to gross a billion dollars worldwide by Sunday. The Last Jedi has been doing exceptionally well in premium formats with IMAX reporting the movie crossing the $100 million mark globally from IMAX screens, the second fastest to that mark after The Force Awakens.

Sony Pictures’ Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, starring Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan, continued to give Star Wars some serious competition, especially in their second weekends together.  Over its second three-day weekend, Jumanji took in $50 million, just 8% less than it made in its opening four-day weekend. On New Year’s Day, the family comedy-adventure is estimated to add another $16.2 million, which would give it $66.3 million over the extended week, up 21% from last weekend. (Update: Jumanji officially bested The Last Jedi on New Year’s Day with $16.2 million to Last Jedi‘s $14.5 million.) Directed by Jake Kasdan (New Girl), Sony’s breakout hit has grossed $185.8 million since opening on the Wednesday before Christmas.

Pictures’ musical three-quel Pitch Perfect 3, starring Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson, found some serious competition over the holidays from Fox’s own musical The Greatest Showman, starring Hugh Jackman as P.T. Barnum. Pitch Perfect 3 went into its second weekend with $46.5 million grossed in its first week, but it dropped 21% from its pre-Christmas opening to end up with an est. $21 million over its second four-day weekend.

The Greatest Showman ended up having a significant bump in its second weekend with $15.5 million over the three-day weekend, nearly doubling last weekend’s three-day gross, and an est. $20.8 million including the Monday holiday. That’s a 44% increase over its opening weekend and the $200,000 difference with Pitch Perfect 3 shows that audiences were split between the two musical choices. Showman has grossed an est. $54.3 million since opening the same day as Jumanji.

Fox’s animated film Ferdinand had a similar 44% bump this past weekend  compared to its own pre-Christmas weekend, grossing an est. $14.8 million over the past four days to bring its total to $56.8 million.

Disney-Pixar’s Coco remained in sixth place with an est. $9.7 million over the four-day weekend to bring its domestic gross to $182.1 million. Added to the $359 million grossed overseas (through Sunday), that’s a $541 million global gross since opening in November.

Focus Features’ Darkest Hour, starring Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill, moved up to seventh place with $5.5 million over the three days and an est. $7.6 million including Monday. It has grossed $20.2 million so far.

It was followed closely by Ridley Scott’s drama All the Money in the World, released by Tristar Pictures on Christmas Day after massive reshoots to replace Kevin Spacey with Christopher Plummer. It added roughly $7.5 million over its first full four-day weekend, having grossed an est. $14.7 million in its first week.

Alexander Payne’s Downsizing starring Matt Damon and Warner Bros’ comedy Father Figures both took hits in their second weekends, taking ninth and tenth place with $6.3 million (down 21%) and $5 million (down 8%) respectively. Only the first of them is likely to cross $20 million as both movies will be giving up screens sooner than the movies above.

After opening Christmas Day in 265 theaters, the STXfilms release Molly’s Game, written and directed by Aaron Sorkin and starring Jessica Chastain, made $2.3 million over its first full three-day weekend, preparing for its nationwide release this coming Friday.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s new film Phantom Thread, starring Daniel Day Lewis, also opened in New York and L.A on Christmas Day and has grossed  $528,000 in its first week. Other specialty releases over the holidays included Steven Spielberg’s The Post, which 20th Century Fox released in nine theaters just before Christmas where the journalism drama has grossed $1.8 million in its first eleven days. It will expand nationwide on Jan. 12.

Another milestone achieved over the holiday break was Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird becoming A24’s highest grossing release with more than $31 million grossed by New Year’s Day. It surpasses the $27.8 million grossed by the company’s Best Picture-winning release Moonlight last year.
