Star Trek Beyond director Justin Lin has been tapped to direct and produce HOT WHEELS, the feature adaptation of the popular children’s toy line from Mattel. Lin and his Perfect Storm have an option to co-finance as well.
Several other names have been attached to the project over the years, including McG to direct and produce for Columbia before it moved to Joel Silver and Warners. More recently Simon Crane was attached to direct in 2013 but the project stalled out. Legendary holds the rights to the project and it will be overseen by Alex Garcia.
This is one of several projects in the works for Mattel, who are set to release Max Steel based on the action figures in October, in addition to movie versions of Masters of the Universe and Barbie in the works at Sony. They also have Monster High set up at Universal.
Lin, who is best known for his work in the Fast and Furious franchise, most recently directed and produced Star Trek Beyond.
He is repped by CAA and Cinetic Media.
