In the pic, loosely inspired by J.K. Rowling’s novel of the same name, Waterston will play Porpentina, who comes across magiczoologist Newt Scamander (Redmayne) when he arrives in New York City on his expedition to discover and document new magical creatures, set seventy years before the boy who lived’s adventures.
David Yates, who helmed the last four Harry Potter films, will direct from a script penned by Rowling. Waterson won the starring role over a slew of other actresses announced to be up for the part in May. The film will bow on Nov. 18, 2016, and is intended to be the first installment of a trilogy.
Though Waterston had a notable role on HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, it was her star-making turn in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice, which co-starred Joaquin Phoenix and Josh Brolin, that brought her to the forefront.
Next up, she’ll appear as Steve Jobs’ girlfriend Chrisann Brennan opposite Michael Fassbender, Seth Rogen, and Jeff Daniels in the Danny Boyle directed/Aaron Sorkin scripted Steve Jobs biopic. She’ll also star alongside Jason Sudeikis, Alison Brie, and Adam Scott in the indie comedy Sleeping With Other People.
