It seems that Kathy Bates is getting into the holiday spirit, or rather spirits, joining Billy Bob Thornton’s drunken mall Santa in BAD SANTA 2. Mean Girls helmer Mark Waters is directing the dark comedy sequel, which picks up where things left off since the raunchy 2003 holiday hit.
Andrew Gunn and Geyer Kosinski are producing, while Miramax and Broad Green Pictures co-produce. Plot details are being kept under wrapping paper, but sources confirm that Bates will play Sunny Soke, the tough mother of Thornton’s boozing curmudgeon, Willie Soke.
Original cast members Tony Cox and Brett Kelly are also set to return, with production gearing up for a January 2016 start. Waters will direct from a script penned by Johnny Rosenthal, Doug Ellin and Shauna Cross.
As of recently, Bates has been a primary cast member on FX’s American Horror Story, appearing on the last three seasons, which has garnered her two Emmy nominations and one win. Up next, she’ll appear in Universal’s The Boss opposite Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Bell, and Peter Dinklage.
Bates is repped by ICM.
