Keri Russell and Mahershala Ali have signed on to the cast of FREE STATE OF JONES. Written and directed by Gary Ross (The Hunger Games), the Civil War biopic is based on the true story of Newton Knight, the leader of one of the greatest rebellions in Civil War history. When he defected from the Confederate Army, he banded together with a group of soldiers to form a state known as the Free State of Jones.
Matthew McConaughey stars as Knight in the STX Entertainment production. Russell is set to play Serena, Knight’s wife and Ali will be Moses Washington, an escaped slave who becomes a vital ally to Knight’s cause.
Russell currently stars on the FX drama series The Americans. She also starred in last year’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes with Gary Oldman. She is repped by WME and Burstein Company. Ali co-stars in Netflix’s drama House of Cards. He is also featured in the final two installments of the Hunger Games franchise. He is repped by WME and Anonymous Content.
