Since graduating from the Twilight franchise, has largely eschewed commercial fare in favor of more challenging indie projects, with the exception of Snow White and the Huntsman. While those arthouse films have certainly given her more credibility as a dramatic actress, Stewart would surely benefit from doing a cool movie, and it looks like she has finally found one in ’s adventure thriller .

The Tracking Board has confirmed that Stewart is in negotiations to star in the movie, which (The Signal) is directing for .

Described as an underwater Armageddon, the film follows an underwater crew of scientists who are forced to fight for their survival following a devastating earthquake.

revised ’s original screenplay, and production could start as soon as next month in New Orleans.

Stewart next stars in the Cannes-approved ghost story Personal Shopper and the true crime drama Lizzie, in which she plays Lizzie Borden’s maid and possible lover/co-conspirator Bridget Sullivan opposite Chloe Sevigny.

I may have skipped the Twilight movies and hated Snow White and the Huntsman, but I do think Stewart is talented and I look forward to seeing her in a mainstream movie that isn’t based on a fairy tale. Underwater may be exactly what her needs right now, and hopefully Fox finds her a better romantic interest than Chris Hemsworth.

Stewart is repped by Gersh, and the Hollywood Reporter broke the news of her casting.
