Since graduating from the Twilight franchise, Kristen Stewart has largely eschewed commercial fare in favor of more challenging indie projects, with the exception of Snow White and the Huntsman. While those arthouse films have certainly given her more credibility as a dramatic actress, Stewart would surely benefit from doing a cool studio movie, and it looks like she has finally found one in 20th Century Fox’s adventure thriller UNDERWATER.
Described as an underwater Armageddon, the film follows an underwater crew of scientists who are forced to fight for their survival following a devastating earthquake.
Stewart next stars in the Cannes-approved ghost story Personal Shopper and the true crime drama Lizzie, in which she plays Lizzie Borden’s maid and possible lover/co-conspirator Bridget Sullivan opposite Chloe Sevigny.
I may have skipped the Twilight movies and hated Snow White and the Huntsman, but I do think Stewart is talented and I look forward to seeing her in a mainstream movie that isn’t based on a fairy tale. Underwater may be exactly what her career needs right now, and hopefully Fox finds her a better romantic interest than Chris Hemsworth.
